Every day, millions of Muslims around the world bow down in prayer while facing the Kaaba. A fundamental aspect of Islam, prayer can take anywhere between five and seven minutes and while most Muslims pray on a rug if they're not in a mosque, a new photo series shows Muslims praying in public spaces across America.

Muslim photographer Sana Ullah started the series on Instagram under an account called placesyoullpray, in an attempt to combat the negative portrayal of Muslims in the media. It features hundreds of pictures of Muslims praying in public spaces across the US and submissions from others around the world.

Ullah's goal with the photo series is to demonstrate the ease with which Muslims pray, rather than flaunting the idea of piety or prayer. She usually asks her subjects to take them to a place they recall praying in the past and then photographs them there.

Here we look at a series of photographs from the collection.
