Pro-Kazmi March: Protesters in Multan wreck shops, terrorise people

Supporters of former religious affairs minister vandalised shops and fired guns to condemn his arrest.

MULTAN: Supporters of former minister for religious affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi vandalised shops and fired guns in the air here on Sunday to condemn his arrest in connection with his alleged involvement in the Hajj scam.

The protests were led by Mazhar Saeed Kazmi, the minister’s older brother, and most of the protesters were students of his madrassa. The protest began with a rally at Bahawalpur bypass near the madrassa. They fired into the air and attacked some commercial properties.

Television images showed stick-wielding protesters smashing cars and shop windows. They demanded Kazmi’s immediate release, or else they would hold further protests. They said the real culprits in the scam were the son of a major politician and his friend.

Police were called in to control the situation and they arrested several men for vandalising property and scuffling with police.

Ali | 13 years ago | Reply Only in Paksitan is damage to properties permiitted. The people who smashed the car windows, shop windows should be prosecuted and forced to pay for the damage done. It's a bit like after the "great" leader Benazir died. Her supporters caused huge damage across the country and got away with it. It set a bad precedent and now we are paying the price for this appalling behaviour.
