GILGIT: A child, who has been diagnosed with poliovirus in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), had been twice vaccinated against the disease, locals and officials said on Wednesday.

The 14-month-old boy, who contracted the virus recently, lives in Thore Valley of District Diamer, one of the G-B’s most backward valleys.

The news surfaced after an arm and the lower parts of the child got paralysed and his family took him first to Chilas and later to Abbottabad for checkup.

“There were some sudden abnormalities in the child and we decided to have him checked. The results were shocking because the child had already been administered drops twice,” a relative told reporters.

As the case surfaced, a team of doctors rushed to the area to gather firsthand information.
