HARIPUR: Unidentified thieves broke into a Haripur mosque and stole its fans and an emergency power supply, police said on Wednesday.

Maulana Goher Rehman, the prayer leader for the Jamia Masjid Muhallah Gandiyan in Darra village, told Khanpur police that he had locked the mosque after Isha prayers on Tuesday evening.

But when he returned early on Wednesday for the pre-dawn Fajr prayers, he found locks of the mosque broken.

He added that when he entered the mosque he found that all five fans installed in the building along with an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) unit and two batteries were missing.

Rehman added that the thieves had broken the locks on the mosque’s main entrance. He added that the valuables were worth thousands of rupees.

The cleric added that the thieves had also left a letter for him at the place where the UPS once sat.

In the letter, the thieves explained that since they had stolen valuables from a house of God, it was now a matter between them and God and that area residents and the pray leader had no right to call the police into the matter and punish innocent villagers.

Apparently considering the letter as insufficient grounds to pursue the matter further, Khanpur police registered a criminal case against unidentified thieves and have started an investigation.
