For years, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation's strategy for controlling the stray dog population is to kill them.

Dogs are either shot or fed poisoned meat and then left to die, after which they are picked up and dumped with the trash.

Recently, cases of dogs being poisoned by KMC have popped up once again.

On March 10, actress Muzna Ebrahim posted two videos in which she talked about the culling of three out of her four adopted stray dogs. Since she lives in an apartment, she was unable to keep them in her house, but she used to feed them and said they were friendly. KMC however, after receiving complaints from neighbours poisoned the dogs and left them to die.

In her video, Ebrahim is seen visibly upset, pleading KMC to find a better way to fix this issue.

Another video, not for the fainthearted, showed her stray dog Aurora suffering after she was poisoned. The dog can be seen lying on the ground and spasming as Ebrahim is helpless.

In a separate Facebook post she said the dogs went "into spasms and writhe in pain for 30 to35 minutes" before they died in her arms.

Her posts on Facebook gained widespread recognition as other people also shared their KMC horror stories.

Stray dogs rounded up, culled in Karachi

Last August, KMC poisoned almost 800 dogs, drawing criticism from animal rights activists around the country.

Culling of stray dogs was challenged in Sindh High Court in September 2016, where the petitioner called for a more humane way to deal with the situation.

Ebrahim's viral post also caught the attention of MPA Khurram Sher Zaman, who promised her he would be raising the issue in the Sindh Assembly and find a better way out.

Shiraz | 7 years ago | Reply I personally dont like dogs and they are a nuisance on the streets and dangerous too. However killing dogs this way is absolutely wrong. Just remember this quote which should end the debate: 'If a dog dies hungry on the banks of the River Euphrates, Umar will be responsible for dereliction of duty.' - Hazrat Umar Farooq (R.A)
Jered McDougal | 7 years ago | Reply Are people willing to take responsibility for the dogs? The dogs who people claim are theirs should have collars and ID tags and instead of killing them they should get the owners to take responsibility.
