NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party claimed election victory in four Indian states on Saturday, calling it a "historic mandate" that would take the country's politics in a new direction.

BJP leader Amit Shah said the party would form governments in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, where early counting showed it had won an overwhelming victory, as well as in Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur.

"This is a historic mandate by the people of these states for BJP," he said at a press conference at the party's New Delhi headquarters.

"These results will set Indian politics in a new direction."

India's Election Commission is due to announce the final results later Saturday, but early counting shows the BJP leading in four out of five states where elections have been held over the past two months.

The opposition Congress Party retained power in just one state, northern Punjab.

Shah said the results were a defeat for "dynastic politics", in an apparent jibe at Congress, led by Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul.

"The people have accepted the politics of performance," he said, promising that the faith they had placed in the party and in Modi would be rewarded.

rich | 7 years ago | Reply abreez, In Punjab BJP got 17 seats and lost 51 seats, one should ask Amit Shah why people of Punjab rejected BJP because here BJP failed to purchase votes. People of Punjab feed India and one find little poverty in Punjab but Modi’s blunder of 8 November, 2016 caused unimaginable losses to the people of Punjab. It’s too early to calculate effects of Modi’s blunder; a chain reaction is in the process. . in punjab bjp had only 12 seats in 2012 they were in coalition wit SAD party. u are saying rich state. well they were in power in goa a richest state in india, where every elderly person is given pensiaon by govt, power cousumption is the higest per capita, u will never ever find a goan beggar, anywher in goa or india, where per capita ownership of vehicles is higest, compares to any state in india or saarc weell hpw did bjp win, and its has a huge catholic population remmember indian punjapis just 2% of india lans mass and a little over 2% of india population, sokhs are about 60% of the population hindus 40%
