Pakistani university among world's top 300 business schools

The Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has been ranked among the top 300 business schools of the world, by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British ranking agency.

While Harvard University in the United States topped the ranking, followed by London Business School in the United Kingdom, SDSB at LUMS ranked at 251.

Being the only Pakistani university to be featured on the list, LUMS took to its official Facebook page to announce the achievement.

The rankings for each subject were based on four factors:

Academic reputation

Citations per paper

Employer reputation

H-index citations

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 cover a total of 46 disciplines – highlighting the world’s top-performing universities in each academic area. The rankings are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject. Research citations, along with the results of major global surveys of employers and academics are used to rank universities.

Last year, six Pakistani institutes of higher education were ranked among the world’s top 800 universities by QS rankings.

H Saif Ur Rehman | 7 years ago | Reply Its Good to see LUMS in Top 300 universities in the world but it is not enough. We all have to work hard to see more than one university in top ten universities of the world. And I know we can do this.

Sameer | 7 years ago | Reply The univeristies for the rich by the rich...to get further rich. Its all about the money. Imparting educations means nothing but buying a degree. The only difference between Pakistan's uni and axact is that axact doesnt make you wait 4 years for the degree you bought.

The most important elements of any educational system are it's teachers. With so much brain drain and security situation, it would be very hard for institution to retain top class experts.

The business schools in the top 10 belong to universities that have been around for centuries and have billions of dollars in endowment fund. Harvard's endowment fund size is almost equal to Pakistan's entire export in dollar terms.

The rankings are just to help students identify the best university which meets their need, and for someone whose need is to stay in Pakistan and get quality education, LUMS is the option for him. Stop being so whiny all the time.

Aqeel | 7 years ago | Reply It is always such a great fun reading comment on this news. People hating LUMS, saying so what if you are 251, nothing to celebrate and so much more. People saying only top 10 or top 25 are worth it. Do they know that it cost more than 100 thousand dollars to get an MBA from Harvards and INSEADs of these worlds? Do they know Harvard have endowment fund of 35 billion dollars? Anyway go crazy with your critique people. You do provide necessary comic relief on such news.

Shakil | 7 years ago | Reply its merely something to be proud of, but somewhere to start with. Ideally Pakistan should have a few institutions who strive to be in top 100 list. IBA, GIKI, LUMS, NUST, UET, PU, KU, QAU, all has the ingredients to be in the list, They need to get the act together and work towards to achieve some benchmarks.

kemosabe | 7 years ago | Reply @khanali: They have tried to model themselves around Harvard using that school's case-study approach, big deal ! Other business schools do the same but that doesn't make them copies. There is a lot more to it than that.

Professor Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar | 7 years ago | Reply First congratulations to all Pakistanis, a pride worth celebrating. At the same time, it is important to evaluate retrospects also. Credit goes to all the faculty, staff, hardworking students and much more. However, the person who steers the ship matters a lot. I think all Vice Chancellors and students will testify my comments "During his Executive Director, HEC's tenure, the current leader of LUMS response level was unprecedented; whether you are a Vice Chancellor or a student, you send him an e-mail and will get the reply/action within 24 hours". If someone so efficient is leading an institution, undoubtedly that will rise. Being in top 300 is just the beginning, let's the ball keep rolling. I forecast LUMS to be in the top 100, not the business school rather many others. Well done LUMS and all involved. Everyone is waiting for more good news from LUMS and other public sector education system.

What is the harm in copying the protocols/procedures/guidelines being taught by Harward, should we all not learn from the best? Did you know that a good portion of MBA case studies has to be from local companies problems/issues?? P.S I am not a Lums student nor alumni...

Rollin & Trollin | 7 years ago | Reply Being ranked 251 is no great shakes. There is a plethora of people with business degrees these days, so, to really cut it, one should graduate from one among the top 25 business schools.
