Senate body gives advice for executing trade package

The committee also recommended appropriate utilisation of the package and stressed for a proper timeline in execution

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Textile Industry, Wednesday, stressed on the need for protection of the local textile industry to enhance the country’s export volume.

The committee gave recommendations for the proper execution of “Trade Enhancement Package” worth Rs161 billion for the industry, announced for the period between January 2017 to June 2018.

Senator Mohsin Aziz, who was also the committee chairman, recommended extending the period of trade enhancement package from 18 months to five years for the benefit of the local textile industry.

The committee also recommended appropriate utilisation of the package and stressed for a proper timeline in execution, protection of local industry for enhancing exports and reducing the energy prices to provide competitiveness.

The committee expressed reservations over replacing the cotton production areas with sugarcane and maize crops.
