IAEA approves safeguards for K-2, K-3 nuclear power plants

The power plants will help meet Pakistan’s increasing energy needs

ISLAMABAD: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) approved on Wednesday Pakistan’s request for the application of safeguards for K-2 and K-3 nuclear power plant units, according to an official handout.

The approval was made by the nuclear watchdog's board of governors, it said.

These two nuclear power plants in Karachi are pressurised water reactors of 1100 megawatt each and are being acquired from China.

‘No danger of nuclear leaks from K2, K3’

“Civil nuclear power generation is an important component of Pakistan’s energy security policy and a vital developmental imperative,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

These power plants, the communiqué added, would serve as important vehicle to help meet Pakistan’s increasing energy needs and support sustained economic growth and industrial development.

“Pakistan has the rare distinction of keeping all its civilian nuclear facilities under IAEA Safeguards, signifying its commitment to global objectives of non-proliferation,” the FO said.

Concerns regarding the construction and operation of nuclear plants in Karachi must not be puffed up considering the excellent record of Pakistan’s nuclear safety and security. Pakistan is engaged with the international community on nuclear safety and security issues and is working to enhance its participation in the efforts of nuclear safety.

Fahad | 7 years ago | Reply I hope PAEC has conducted PRA thoroughly and is able to show IAEA that the risk from such plants add no particular increment to the risk faced to Karachi.
