Mahershala Ali’s Oscar controversy

Letter March 03, 2017
The Express Tribune's author in no way tries to prove that the reason behind Lodhi deleting tweet was Ali’s faith.

IOWA CITY, USA: This is in response to the article titled, “Mahershala Ali’s Oscar win stirs controversy in Pakistan,” published on the Express Tribune’s website on February 27. The article states that, “Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi was forced to delete a congratulatory tweet when people on Twitter began pointing out that Mahershala Ali was an Ahmadi.” However, the author in no way tries to prove that the reason behind Maleeha Lodhi deleting the tweet was because of Mahershala Ali’s faith system. The least the author could do was ask Maleeha Lodhi for comments; instead, the author just follows up the statement by posting Twitter reactions. One of the biggest issues that hound the Pakistani media is that everyone from talk-show hosts to journalists make allegations without any proof. Good journalism avoids gossip from being published and reputable newspapers and magazines should always follow this rule.
