New wave of terrorist attacks

Letter February 25, 2017
The foremost is the inefficiency of our police, which is our first line of defence

RAWALPINDI: The intensity and callousness with which the recent terrorist attacks have occurred in major cities of Pakistan, with the most recent in Lahore at the time of writing, has raised many flags in my mind. The foremost is the inefficiency of our police, which is our first line of defence. It is supposed to protect the public from such incidents. The facilities, official and unofficial, which a grade 18 police officer (SP) gets is more than the facilities enjoyed by grade 20 officials in the army or other organisations, such as a colonel or associate professor.

I suggest unequivocally that the present police force be banned and a new police force be hired where merit be given due precedence while training a new police force. Until the time this action is completed, the army or Rangers may be given the additional task of policing the country. The army, otherwise, is fully committed to internal security duties and is the only organisation that has performed in Sindh. If we have to look for the army’s support for all the tasks of the government including the census, Wapda, and education, then why not make it a part of their duty and raise their pay manifold?
