SUKKUR: A wanted criminal who carried head money of Rs500,000, Fauji Jatoi, was killed in an encounter with the police in Bagarji Bello, some 25 kilometres away from Sukkur, on Thursday.

Jatoi, a notorious dacoit, was killed while he and his accomplices were crossing towards the katcha of Khairpur and encountered a police team from Sukkur.

After an exchange of fire Jatoi was killed while some of his accomplices were wounded. His gang members managed to escape along with their injured accomplices but Jatoi’s body was taken into custody by the police.

The Sukkur SSP and a heavy contingent of police rushed to the scene, after which the body of the killed dacoit was shifted to a hospital for postmortem. Sources in the police said that the police have been deployed at different locations in the katcha of Bagarji, especially at the bordering areas connecting Khairpur and Shikarpur, to monitor the movement of outlaws.

SSP Amjad Ahmed Shaikh confirmed Jatoi’s death and said his accomplices were injured in the exchange of fire but were able to flee. Jatoi was a notorious criminal, he said, adding that he was a close aide of dacoit Raheem Bux Phulpoto of Khairpur district.

Jatoi was involved in the killing of two policemen in Khairpur four months ago during an encounter, in which one of his close aide Ashiq Jatoi was also killed, said the SSP. “Today Fauji and his accomplices were most probably crossing into Khairpur to exact revenge for his killed aide,” said Shaikh. He added that Jatoi was wanted in more than 28 cases by the Khairpur and Sukkur police.
