Staying true to tradition

Rich brocades, shimmering gota patti and intricate handwork are dominant in Wardha Saleem’s latest Rangraaz collection

LAHORE: Wardha Saleem unravels the furtive colours of love, tradition and celebration in her latest collection. Titled 'Rangraaz', the offerings feature rich brocades, shimmering gota patti, intricate handwork and a magnificent display of hues – all ushered in this season with a section of bespoke couture from the designer.

“'Rangraaz' is very close to my heart considering my love for colour; also Sub-continental heritage serves as the main inspiration behind this collection,” she tells The Express Tribune.

Inspired by tradition, Saleem uses traditional block and screen printing techniques alongside intricate embroideries and rich embellishments. “Intricate embroideries and unconventional gota work are the main elements of this collection,” she shares. It also incorporates pearl work, gemstones and Swarovski crystals on the canvas of rich jamawars, pure silks, and organza. Vivid hues of fuchsia, orange, green, lustrous blue, plum and red make for an opulent colour palette.

The curator of this exquisite shoot is Mariam Saeedullah Khan, the artist who transformed the old walls into canvas where each shot by Tapu Javeri has been captured to perfection. Models are spotted sporting jewellery by Sherezad Rahimtoola. The 'Rangraaz' collection has been shot in an old restored haveli in Saddar, Karachi, chosen specifically for the grandeur of the setting.

Saleem’s bridals are an amalgam of unconventional and traditional inspirations. “I want to make clothes that are timeless and true to our tradition,” adds Saleem. Each ensemble is designed in a way that it can be passed down to generations, with its flair and quality intact.



Being a teacher and a student of history, Saleem has the advantage to view tradition on a global scale.  But the designer is known for her modernist vision as well. “Several interesting silhouettes have been introduced through this collection that define latest trends while maintaining its traditional essence,” mentions Saleem. Her style philosophy is experimental and playful yet sophisticated.

Her label was launched seven years ago and since then she has showcased her collections locally and internationally. The brand has also exhibited exclusive collections at the Maison Moulin de l’Est in Paris, Alchemy Fashion Festival in London and Fashion Scout, London Fashion Week.
