YouTube video of the day: The impact of music

KARACHI: Music plays an important role in every society – not so much in ours. The video is a step taken by students of Greenwich University to renew our consciousness about the ailments that inflict our society and how they can be cured through music.

With our political situation and sensitive role in the ongoing war against terrorism, one wonder if music can be used to create and revive a sense of awareness amongst the people like it has in western societies. Bob Dylan, Tupac, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles are great examples of such practice.

There have been many local artists that have embarked upon the path of reviving patriotism and loyalty to the country by making music about the societal dilemmas that encompass our society. Junoon, Shahzad Roy, Atif Aslam, Ali Zafar are some of the more renowned ones. However, smaller bands, such as Jazba, have also taken the opportunity in the past to take a leftist approach on the turmoil that exists in Pakistan.
