Umar Akmal gives Pakistan injury scare

Umar Akmal suffers finger injury during practice; scans reveal no fracture.

PALLEKELE: Pakistan's Umar Akmal, who has been tipped to succeed his calamity-hit brother Kamran as World Cup wicket-keeper, suffered a finger injury in practice.

But team manager Intikhab Alam said scans had revealed no fracture for the middle order batsman. "Umar hurt his index finger in the right hand while practicing on Thursday and we rested him as precaution. His scans were all clear," Alam told AFP.

Pakistan are considering handing the wicket-keeping gloves to 20-year-old Umar, the younger brother of Kamran who fluffed two chances in Pakistan's 110-run defeat against New Zealand on Tuesday.

Umar kept wicket in three Twenty20 matches and in a one-day international last year. Pakistan take on Zimbabwe in their next Group A match on Monday where a win will guarantee a place in the quarter-finals. Pakistan have six points from four matches, while Zimbabwe have two from their four.

Faisal | 13 years ago | Reply This is just a drama. Umar Akmal is more loyal to Pakistran or his brother. Need to kick both of them out. Asad can keep wickets I have seen him in a domestic match. Pakistan strength is bowling we all know that. Must kick Hafeez off as well and bring back Saeed Ajmal.

Mirza | 13 years ago | Reply Akmal's or no Akmal , Pakistan team management should decide now that Worst has come or yet to come at the hands of Akmal's brothers, The catrosphic wicket keeping coupled with disastrous batting form and delibrate injury by younger Akmal can lead to an early exist from World Cup 2011. Ivory of the fact is that despite self proclaimed injury the team management has no choice but to remain persistence with Kamran.In my opinion Afridi should now take a decision to drop Kamran Akmal other wise team should pack up and ready for an early exit from World Cup Journey.Its time for the management to decide whether they will continue to be blackmailed by Akmal's or take a decision in right direction by banning both of them from playing cricket in self interest.

Ross | 13 years ago | Reply There's a huge list of players lobbying and not just one including the board members. Its just that he does it in such a noob way that it becomes obvious. Afridi and the other players (not involved in it) are helpless about these happenings. There has been absolutely no follow up on Zulqarnain Haider's case as well. The reason why he cannot name any of these scoundrels in public is because he knows these people have a strong politcal backing (right from the top) and cannot fight them inside or outside the court and I don't blame him either.

Dancing around the pitch from the first ball, and then just making a few runs, and getting out irresponsibly, without understanding that the team requires him more than just a few mere runs. I wonder if there is anyone giving him any sense on batting, and working on exploiting his capabilities, or else it would another talent going to waste, very soon.
