Pakistan’s police force

Letter January 25, 2017
Policemen are underappreciated so we need to speak in favour of them

RAWALPINDI: The general image of Pakistan’s police force among Pakistanis is that it is marked by corruption, human rights violations, arbitrary arrests and detention, torture, extrajudicial killings and prolonged harassment. There is a lot of police-hating rhetoric that it is exasperating. Their sacrifices for people’s safety are totally neglected. We often forget that the men and women of the police department are living, breathing human beings who should be the symbols of hope, justice and safety. Except for a few black sheep in the department, they have peace-keeping spirits. Every day, they put their lives on the line for people regardless of their race, religion or sex. Policemen are underappreciated so we need to speak in favour of them. Hopefully, next time any of us meets a police officer, we will shake his or her hand and thank him for his or her services each and every day.
