If we have to sum up the joys of winter chills in one word, it will surely be Paaye! Any foodie would definitely have their mouth water at the mere sight of it. The delicious, humble bowl of curried bones and the soft mushy stuff inside the bones, commonly known as bone marrow, is super flavoursome and comforting. Until recently this winter delight had a not-so-delish reputation. But kudos to us — we’re here to debunk the myths surrounding the lip-smacking “gooda” or bone marrow consumption.

According to research conducted by Dr Daniel Auer, a certified clinical nutritionist, and Jill Grunewald, a holistic nutrition coach and founder of Healthful Elements, bone marrow and bone broth may help fight cancer, build immunity, repair wounds and facilitate digestion.

Rebuilds your body

As stated by Cindy Micleu, instructor at the Jade Institute complementary healing centre, bone marrow contains stem cells known as myeloid and lymphoid that helps clotting and provides oxygen to the cells. Due to the long cooking time of bone marrow and broth, which may vary from 4 hours to 40 hours, the delicious stew contains collagen, a protein rich substance which is helpful in making gelatin and helps repair down the body. Collagen present in bone marrow can help rebuild the body itself.

Eases digestion

One of the reasons Dr Auer recommends the consumption of bone marrow is because it helps eradicate the complaints of inflammatory conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, gluten intolerance and leaky gut syndrome. He believes that bone marrow’s collagen can help rebuild intestinal lining and tissues. Bone marrow’s immune boosting proficiencies can also help those finding it difficult to overocme digestion problems.

Fights cancer

A Swedish oncologist, Dr. Astrid Brohult, administrated the effects of bone marrow on children with leukemia, and saw instant improvements. He also noted that children who consumed bone marrow also experienced increased energy levels and white blood cell stabilisation.

Heals your gut

Bone broth can help cure leaky gut syndrome if you consume just a cup of it every day, says ll Grunewald, a nutrition coach. The gelatin found in the bones, from which the broth is extracted, can help heal up the holes in intestines. This can help cure prolonged diarrhea, constipation, and even some food intolerances.

Protects your joints
Taking pills and supplements for joint pain is common knowledge but did you know that bone broth naturally possesses a supplement known as glucosamine to alleviate achy joints. Consuming bone   broth helps relieve the pain, keeping your joints healthy with no side effects that pills may contain!

Helps retain youth

Did you know that most of the ‘plumping’ products in the market contain collagen, which in fact is the main component in bone marrow? Consumption of it can actually help you look younger and more radiant — without having to visit a dermatologist for pricey peels and fillers. Both broth and marrow also help maintain the health of your nails and hair, all while making your skin beam. We’re sold!
