While we love the traditional items and have our favourites and must-trys, we think it would be safe to say that we most look forward to something innovative and different each year.
Hence, we made a list of things we tried on the first day of Karachi EAT Festival that were inventive yet delicious and hard to find outside the festival.
1. Smashamosas
You will find these at the Breast and Loin stall. While they had other delicious items on their menu, the smashamosa stood out. Smashamosa is a crispy fried samosa with a cheese filling dressed with a generous helping of beef chilli and not only did it look good it tasted delightful.
2. Strip steak in Ponzu sauce
Over at the Meat up stall they were selling tender juicy strips of beef with two different types of sauces. The Japanese ponzu sauce was delicious with the steak. Just make sure you don’t pour all of it over your beef.
3. French toast
What’s so special about French toast? This wasn’t just any French toast; Orange custard infused and caramelised and crispy on the outside, this chunky slice is worth the wait. Head over to Fatso’s for this one.
4. Gelato puffs
Ice-cream enfolded in choux pastry buns? Sounds good right? It was also quite enjoyable. Head over to Lal’s Patisserie for a taste.
5. Namkeen Rosh
Namkeen what? Exactly! Namkeen Rosh is a dish that resembles Aaloo gosht but is very different in the way it is cooked. The meat is cooked in its own fat to make Namkeen Rosh. The taste may not be for everyone but it is certainly something you can’t find everywhere. You will find Namkeen Rosh at the Peshawar stall.
6. Potato cups
These were being served in three flavours at the Kuiya stall; masala, meetha and pizza. We tried the masala one as well as the meetha one. Both were delicious but we loved the masala Kuiya which was filled with chickpeas and dressed with lemon and imli chatni and a sprinkle of masala.
