India warns of militant attack on World Cup

NEW DELHI: India has sounded an alert over a possible militant attack on the cricket World Cup, a government official said on Wednesday, but he added that there was no specific threat.

“There have been a large number of inputs over the last couple of months," said U.K. Bansal, Secretary, Internal Security.

"All these put together could be an opportunity, which anti-India elements could exploit. We are sounding an alert," added Bansal.

Indian authorities say they have taken measures to ensure that the high-profile tournament undergoes safely.

India suffered one of its worst militant attacks in 2008 when Pakistan-based gunmen carried out coordinated attacks across Mumbai, killing 164 people.
