The Second Floor (T2F) has clarified it has no links with the ‘Baloch Freedom Front’, a group which frequently attributes certain views to its late founder Sabeen Mahmud.

“We would like to clarify and categorically state that T2F is in no way connected, nor endorses any views expressed, by this entity calling itself the ‘Baloch Freedom Front’,” a statement said on Monday.

The organisation, which provides a space for intellectual and cultural creativity, said that it does not endorse the “misleading references to the late T2F founder by the group. “We reserve the right to take appropriate action against the misuse of the name of T2F and of the (late) Sabeen Mahmud,” it warned.

The communiqué, however, said the organisation stood for the right of freedom of speech and expression for all the citizens, including the Baloch people, without any affiliation with any particular political ideology or movement.

T2F is one of the few community spaces for open dialogue; it features a café and bookshop and hosts a packed agenda ranging from writer meet-ups to performing arts to open mic nights.

Sabeen was shot dead in April 2015 in Karachi’s upscale Defence locality after returning home after hosting a session at the cafe. The murder case is continuing at a special military court.
