Kabir Khan named head coach of Pakistan women’s team
Former Test cricket replaces Basit Ali who was sacked on January 2
KARACHI:
Former Test cricketer Kabir Khan has been named Pakistan women’s cricket team head coach after Basit Ali was relieved from the duties on January 2.
According to a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official, Kabir will be heading the coaching panel alongside batting coach Shahid Anwer and fielding coach Iqbal Imam. Ayesha Ashar will be team’s manager.
Kabir was previously the head coach of HBL team and led them to victory in the recently concluded National One-Day Cup. He has also coached Khyber Pakhtunkhwa team in the domestic circuit.
Basit Ali likely to be reinstated as chief of junior selection committee
The national women’s team was left without a coach last week when Basit was relieved from his duties following a spat with former international cricketer Mehmood Hamid at the National Stadium in Karachi.
Meanwhile, the selection committee will consist of Muhammad Ilyas as chairman along with members Nadeem Abbasi and Urooj Mumtaz.
Basit relieved of PCB duties after Hamid scuffle
Ilyas has served as head of the section committee for the men’s team in 2011. He was subsequently suspended by the PCB for alleged breach of conduct for criticising all-rounder Shahid Afridi and appearing on a TV show with then-banned cricketer Salman Butt.
On the other hand, Abbasi has been associated with the Rawalpindi team as head coach, while Urooj has been in the section committees before as well.
