KARACHI:

The cellular network for Pakistan’s largest mobile company, Mobilink, was affected after an exchange in Islamabad caught fire on Sunday, resulting in downtime of services for almost a day. The company’s public relations department confirmed the incident took place at one of the technical hubs in Islamabad.

Power was turned off at the terminal, which caused suspension of services in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and parts of the northern region. However, services were restored by Monday evening.

“All services have been restored and our customers should not be experiencing any difficulty,” said Mobilink Public Relations Director Omar Manzur

The fire in the battery room – which occurred at the company exchange located in I-10/3 – is being investigated by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), according to a spokesperson.

PTA teams reached Mobilink premises to examine the situation and monitor the restoration activity, after occurrence of the incident. A PTA committee is deliberating further action on the issue from technical and legal aspects.
