ISLAMABAD: Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa said on Tuesday the army would continue to render full support to all state institutions working for national security.

He was chairing the first meeting of corps commanders since he took over the military command last month. The meeting was also the first since a major reshuffle in the army following the appointment of Gen Qamar as the army chief.

The corps commanders’ conference took comprehensive review of the security environment and operational preparedness of the army. The commanders expressed satisfaction over progress of Operation Zarb-e-Azb and its positive effects on internal security.

The army chief directed that counterterrorism operations continue and already cleared areas be stabilised. He also directed to intensify efforts for return of temporarily displaced persons (TDPs).

The forum reiterated Pakistan Army’s resolve to be prepared to respond to all types of threats. The forum also appreciated the performance of military courts during the prescribed duration which resulted in a reduction in incidents of terrorism, the military’s media wing said.

The government and the military have decided to revive the military courts and for this purpose a new constitutional amendment would be introduced in parliament.

Gen Qamar said the army would continue to extend full support to all state institutions working for the national security. The statement appears to suggest that the new army chief wants to develop a smooth civil-military relationship, particularly in the areas of national security.

Meanwhile, the army chief congratulated efforts of strategic organisations on successful test fire of Babur-3 cruise missile.
