Women’s Day

Letter March 07, 2011
If women are supported and empowered, it benefits the whole society.

ISLAMABAD: Each year around the world, International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8. Hundreds of events occur not just on this day but throughout the month to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. However, in Pakistan the day has been heralded by the targeting of college girls who had organised a function within the premises of their all-girls institute in Mardan.

If women are supported and empowered, it benefits the whole society. Families are healthier, more children go to school, agricultural productivity improves and incomes increase. In short, communities become more resilient. Empowering women is a critical factor in freeing the millions of people who are caught in the vicious cycle of poverty and hunger. Women must be provided with access to economic and educational opportunities, as well as autonomy.

When will we make a difference and think globally?
