The detailed and animated backgrounds in Saqiba Suleman’s latest collection exude a lively hue in Tanzara Art Gallery, where it is being showcased. With most of the show already sold out, the collection appeals to most art collectors around town.
The Lahore based artist and a graduate of Punjab University has been exhibiting for five years.
Her current collection, apart from being aesthetic and commercial, embodies a litany of emotions that engulf the personality of a woman.
“The idea of expressing life in different circumstances depicted by unique and abstract backgrounds and my reactions are both expressed and concealed within the woman’s posture,” said Suleman.
The figurines are used as an accessory to the painting rather than the subject matter. The artist has concentrated more so on the floral backgrounds and the details embodied in the prints rather than on the figures.
Even though the eye draws directly to the figure, ambiance created by the artist is the soul of personal emotions.
“The artist skilfully devises a world of magical realism with vistas that tempt the viewer to enter the canvas and explore other dimensions,” critiques Marjorie Husain, an art critic.
The modernistic flavour added to the work is fun and appealing.
Adorning walls of the gallery, Suleman’s work spoke volumes to the on-lookers. The figures juxtapose with elements of design and colour to create an almost fantastical world.
“The compositions are well balanced and the imagery, strong and fascinating, invites many levels of interpretation,” said Noshi Qadir of Tanzara, “This in turn allows the viewer to introspect and relate his own story.”
The stimulating and energising collection is a must-see and a great addition to decorative art in one’s home that leaves a lasting impact on the viewer.
