Court throws out intervention plea
Counsel questioned the right of Karachi transporters to go on strike.
KARACHI:
The Sindh High Court disposed of a constitutional petition seeking court intervention to stop Karachi transporters from going on an ‘indefinite strike’.
On Friday, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi heard the petition filed by Advocate Farah Awan, who was represented by Javaid Chattari. The counsel questioned the right of transporters to go on strike.
Additional Advocate General (AAG) representing the state said that the government has reduced petroleum prices and is negotiating with the transporter federations. He said that if the strike was not called off, public vehicles will be taken into custody and used under government arrangements for the residents of Karachi.
Munsif Jan, counsel for the Karachi Transport Ittehad, who was summoned to court, said that the KTI will call off the strike by evening.
Chattari expressed satisfaction over the statement and did not press his petition any further — at which the bench disposed it of as it was “not pressed”.
