While some much-anticipated films joined the coveted 100 crore club, others failed to even recover costs. Here's a list of 2016's highest-grossing Bollywood flicks by Hindustan Times.
1. Sultan
Based on an inspirational story, the Salman-Anushka starrer did wonders at the box office. The movie made over INR3 billion to become the highest grossing movie of 2016 to date.
2. MS Dhoni: The Untold Story
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story was based on the life of Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The film featured Sushant Singh Rajput in a titular role. The movie minted over INR1.32 billion at the box office.
3. Airlift
Akshay Kumar starer Airlift was considered one of the best biopics of 2016. It grossed over INR1.2 billion at the box office.

4. Rustom
Yet another real life story staring Akshay Kumar made it big on the box-office, minting over INR1.2 billion.
5. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Karan Johar's latest venture remained in the news courtesy the controversy surrounding Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan's casting in the much-hyped film. The movie made INR1.12 billion at the box office to rank 5 in the list.

7. Shivaay
Released alongside the much-awaited Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ajay Devgan's Shivaay did fairly good at the box-office, minting over INR1 billion.
