LAHORE: A training programme on newborn care aimed at minimising morality rates in rural areas was launched on Tuesday.

The project was inaugurated at the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan’s Regional Centre Lahore in collaboration with the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA).

CPSP Senior Vice-President Prof Khalid Masood Gondal briefed the audience about the college’s statistics, induction process and residency programmes, etc. He also mentioned the collaboration between CPSP and HSE, Ireland for inducting CPSP trainees in HSE programme.

He added that 500 doctors would go to the UK through the MTI scheme to work at various teaching medical institutions.

APPNA’s Dr Ayesha Najib, who will chair the course, briefed the audience about the neonatal resuscitation programme.

“Newborn mortality rate is very high in Pakistan and this course will be helpful in reducing it,” she said, adding that most of the deliveries take place at homes and there was no trained person to look after the newborn.
