Need for co-curricular activities

Letter December 28, 2016
Govt must ensure that physical exercise and sports are made mandatory in private and public schools

KARACHI: The aim of education in Pakistan is to bind student inside the four walls of a classroom. Often, the concept of education is to facilitate the development of a child, but how is it possible to develop a child through only rote learning? Development means mental development, physical development, emotional development and social development. Our education system pays no heed to this and it has become a business with the owner only interested in collecting high fees from parents. When I asked a ninth grader if he has ever taken part in co-curricular activities, he shocked me by responding with asking what they were. This painted a dark picture of our education system, which has been reduced to only securing high grades. Instead of allowing schools to operate in tiny bungalows with limited open space, the government should take action and ensure that physical exercise and sports are made mandatory for academic curricula in private and public schools and physical space provided for. Students need exposure to co-curricular activities as part of healthy development.
