Kabul slams tripartite meeting in Moscow

Published: December 26, 2016

ISLAMABAD: Kabul has expressed concern at the trilateral meeting of Pakistan, China and Russia which will be held in Moscow on Tuesday without the participation of Afghanistan.

“Our government has not been consulted about objectives of the trilateral meeting,” sources quoted Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Shakeeb Mustaghni as saying

Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nafees Zakaria told the media last week that the conference will discuss “regional peace and stability, including situation in Afghanistan.” Foreign Secretary, Aizaz Chaudhry, will lead the Pakistani delegation in the meeting that is likely to focus on ways how the three nations could enhance cooperation for peace and stability in the war-torn country.

“We have said this earlier also that peace and stability in Afghanistan is in the interest of Pakistan and the entire region. In this spirit, we remain committed and extend all cooperation to the efforts towards bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan,” the spokesperson said during his weekly briefing in Islamabad.

Russian special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov in reported comments has said the consultations on Afghanistan will lay “grounds to establish a wider regional partnership on the issue.” Zamir Kabulov has told the Russian RIA Novosti that it was in the regional stakeholders’ “natural” interests to protect themselves from terrorist spillover, noting that containment efforts should take the form of an “Afghan-regional” project.

However, the Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesperson seemed unimpressed by the Russian and Pakistani stance and insisted that there is “ambiguity about the objectives of the Moscow talks.” He told the BBC Pashto service that participants of the trilateral meeting should share information about the talks.

“We want clarification from all sides involved in the meeting. We have serious concerns about the initiative as Afghanistan was not consulted,” Mustaghni said. Earlier Afghan parliamentarians also lashed out at the three countries for holding the talks on Afghanistan without Afghanistan.  Some MPs described the meeting as violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

At one time, Pakistan conspired with America to make Afghanistan its “strategic depth”. Then it conspired with America to throw the commies out of Afghanistan. Now it is conspiring with the erstwhile commies to decide what should be done with Afghans. All the time, Afghanistan has been the main absent party in the shenanigans that Pakistan has indulged in and around this beleaguered country. Will Pakistan ever learn to have respect for its neighbours? Shouldn’t it expect that all such activities will come back to bite its behind at some point in time?Recommend

How many times that everyone in Pakistan have said “Afghan led, Afghan owned peace process”? Yet, Afghanistan is excluded in what involves Afghanistan.

Pakistan has been the main hurdle in bringing peace to Afghanistan and Pakistan does it with support form China. China supports Pakistan because it wants to seize Pakistan’s territory, coasts and resources. Without China’s support, Pakistan cannot harm Afghanistan. So, Afghanistan should target China and China’s interests in the region first. India and USA will support it. Even Iran will start to support it. Russia is foolish for allowing it to be influenced by China.Recommend

Russians will never be true friends of Turkey or Pakistan.

Their main weapons export is to India and China. Not going to change – 2050 will be 1st and 2nd biggest economies. They are good chess players :-)Recommend

A meeting must have a proper agenda, some vague statement about peace objectives certainly not adequate. The Ambassadors of China, Russia and Pakistan should have held talks with Kabul and taken those inputs into consideration before any such talks were held. When you discuss Afghanistan, one needs the support and confidence of that government to play any positive role. Since Russia does not have a direct border with Afghanistan and China a very short one, the country that could face a backlash would be Pakistan. Why jump from the frying pan into the fire ?Recommend
