LAHORE: A total of 1,373 students graduated at the 19th Convocation of the University of Central Punjab (UCP). Of them, 108 students received their MS and MPhil degrees at a ceremony held on Thursday at the Expo Centre Lahore.
UCP Board of Governors Chairman Mian Amer Mahmood was the chief guest, while British Council Country Director Rosemary Hilhorst, Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President Abdul Basit and Peshawar Zalmi cricket team CEO Zeeshan Afzal were guests of honour.
At the convocation, Daneyal Muhammad Mirza was awarded the roll of honour and two students received merit certificates. Also, 54 position holders were awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals. The Faculty of Information Technology had 247 graduates, UCP Business School 717, School of Accounting & Finance 191, Faculty of Engineering 128, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences 65, Faculty of Pharmacy 14 and School of Media and Communication Studies had 11.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rosemary Hilhorst congratulated the graduates and their families. She said the British Council had been working in Pakistan since 1948 through programmes focused on arts, education, English, society and the examination system. The country director pointed out that the council recently re-launched its libraries in Lahore and Karachi.
She said that 160 universities of Pakistan were linked with the British Council and all VCs of Pakistan, at some point in their career, received training under the leadership programme in the UK.
Abdul Basit asked students to work towards gaining meaningful and result-oriented knowledge. “It is the job of the academia and the industry to promote research as we require more PhDs who can generate new knowledge”.
He also emphasised that the academia and industry need to work in close collaboration to produce the talent required by the job market. The LCCI president encouraged students to look towards entrepreneurship. He said the chamber had opened its doors to graduates looking to establish new businesses.
UCP Pro Rector Dr Muhammad Zafarullah, in his welcome address, thanked the guests, parents and students for being part of the ceremony. He commended the role of the British Council in supporting and promoting the education sector in Pakistan.
“Research is an important part of teaching and learning at UCP. The varsity regularly holds international conferences on current issues related to business management. The Fourth International Conference on Contemporary Issues in Business Management (ICIBM) is scheduled on March 21 and 22, 2017. Four professors from the Kedge Business School will be part of the conference along with researchers, scholars and representatives of Pakistan’s corporate sector,” he announced.
1,101 graduate from UVAS
The 8th convocation of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore was held on Thursday when 1,101 students received their degrees. Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana presided over the ceremony
Addressing the convocation, the governor congratulated the graduating students on their degrees and medals. He said it was their turn to contribute to nation building and development. He urged girl students to not sit at home after getting their degrees and join their respective fields.
