Drug abuse culture

Letter December 21, 2016
A university is as equally responsible as the person himself

SWABI: Very recently, I was reading news on drug usage and drug suppliers caught at a prestigious university of Pakistan and then the death of a young boy due to high dose of drug intake and it made me wonder how vulnerable our youth are to these curses. From childhood to late age, when we cross roads or go through an underpass daily, we come across homeless people taking drugs. I have been observing drug users since I was a child and wonder about the solutions to eradicate this curse from our society.

First of all, thorough measures should be devised by university administrations for strict rules against drug abuse. Secondly, a proper boundary is not maintained at most universities so any outsider can enter and do whatever he or she wants, making it necessary for a university to construct walls. Third, while entering a university, checking should be mandatory. Parents send their children out hoping for bright futures; they never want their beloved child to end up being an addict. It is a major responsibility of universities to take care of their students’ mental and physical health and needs. A university cannot put blame on the youth because the youth is under their care. A university is as equally responsible as the person himself. Government universities are highly nominated for having such illicit activities on their campuses so steps at the government level are very important to eradicate this evil from our young generation.
