Suzuki Vitara: Combining the best of an SUV with small car dynamics

A person who has done well for himself will want a car that reflects his achievements.

In the fast-paced world of today, a person's driving needs and wants have undergone a drastic transformation.

People who have toiled hard and done well usually tend to want a car that epitomises their achievements. Such individuals usually go for mammoth SUVs. But, a smaller vehicle is better suited for the less ostentatious who prize practicality over and above everything else.

To fulfil these demands, car manufacturers across the world have introduced a crossover category - an automobile which combines the best features of an SUV with the dynamics of a smaller car. In Pakistan, due to a changing trends and a growing economy, the demand for SUVs is on the rise.

While Suzuki is globally renowned as a small car specialist, one cannot afford to forget that the company also boasts an extremely successful range of 4x4s. Of these, the Vitara -- in production since 1988 -- happens to be the first of its kind.

At that point in time, Suzuki was thinking ahead when it targeted a segment with low customer interest. Due to this, the Vitara was redesigned to become a grown-up SUV in its second and third generations -- the last of which was released in 2005.

Then, with trends changing in favour of crossover vehicles again, the fourth generation Vitara was unveiled at Paris Motor Show in 2014 to cater to just that. Combining a sleek, modern design with the boldness of an SUV, the Vitara has won praise for its design and inspired many with its competitive feature package. The top of the line Vitara GLX is available for Rs. 3,799,000 and the Vitara GL+ is available for Rs. 3,490,000.

The fourth generation Vitara, was launched in Pakistan on 21st December 2016. Pak Suzuki MD Hirofumi Nagao and Pak Suzuki Marketing GM Azam Mirza were at the launching ceremony. Suzuki’s new brand ambassador Fawad Khan was declared the first owner of the Suzuki Vitara in Pakistan at the launching ceremony in Islamabad.

The Vitara comes with a 1.6L naturally-aspirated engine which delivers a decent 118bhp at 6,000 revs. While this may not sound much, the unique selling point of the vehicle is its weight. Weighing only 1,185 kilogrammes, the Vitara is one of the lightest SUVs on offer, improving its power-to weight-ratio to 104 bhp/ton. It's worth mentioning that while vehicles with turbocharged engines may offer greater power, their power-to-weight ratios remain well under 100. This is indicative of the Vitara's superior performance.

The Vitara features a multifunction steering equipped with cruise control and audio control features. The six-speed automatic transmission is enabled with a manual mode which allows drivers to feel the manual changing sensation with paddle shifters equipped on the steering wheel.

A multi-function display shows the economy, mileage and range of the vehicle along with other variables. The air-conditioning can be automatically controlled with input from outside temperature sensors.

The hi-spec Vitara also comes equipped with a panoramic sunroof which makes drives even more pleasurable. Keyless entry is also enabled for the hi-spec variant along with automatic headlamps and wipers for drivers' convenience.

A striking feature of the Vitara is its unique infotainment system. It features a 10.1-inch touchscreen with an Android operating system. The system can also connect to users' mobile phones using Bluetooth and mirror link.

As far as safety is concerned, the Vitara is unparalleled. The vehicle combines high tensile steel for cabin safety with smart crumple zones that ensure enhanced accidental safety for occupants. Additionally, safety features including seven SRS airbags and seat belts with ELR and pre-tensioners guarantee post-accident occupant safety.

The Vitara also comes equipped with an ESP that allows the vehicle to remain under control even on the harshest of terrains. The anti-breaking system together with electronic brakeforce distribution ensure high braking performance.

The car also features hill hold and descent controls which promise both, a safe and comfortable drive on hilly terrain. The car also comes equipped with parking sensors that further increase drivers' convenience. The Vitara's LED-projector headlamp provides for superior visibility on unlit roads in addition to making the vehicle more visually striking.

The Vitara's indigenous “All Grip” function combines four driving modes which allow drivers' maximum control over the vehicle across all terrains and driving conditions. The car automatically switches between 2WD and 4WD to help drivers ensure that the Vitara grips terrain. Other driving modes include sports and snow.

Compared to its rivals, the Vitara boasts features that others only have as otherwise optional extras. In addition to providing enhanced performance and increasing driving pleasure, the Vitara's many features also ensure unparalleled occupant safety.

This one is definitely a must-have for those who have earned their success!
