Pakistan Navy rescues 41 Yemeni ship crew in Gulf of Aden

Search for the remaining 19 crew members is underway

Pakistan Navy rescued on Saturday 41 Yemeni crew from their sinking dhow as it commanded a rescue operation in the Gulf of Aden.

The Combined Task Force 151 (CTF-151) headquarter had received information that a Yemeni ship carrying 60 personnel was sinking 30 nautical miles northwest of Socotra island, a navy statement said.

PNS Shamsheer, Pakistan Navy said, was tasked with the search and rescue operation, and surveillance by an aircraft was ordered by HQ CTF-151 to locate the survivors.

The ship promptly responded to the call and reached the site within a few hours. Upon reaching the area, PNS Shamsheer assumed duties of and coordinated in the rescue efforts.

Subsequently, 41 personnel on the Yemeni ship were rescued while search for the remaining ones continued.

The operation involved naval ships of Spain and Australia with embarked helicopters aided by the land-based aircraft from Japan and Germany. Overall, the entire operation was coordinated by Pakistan Navy-led CTF 151.

The ship was operating as part of international Coalition Task Force of naval ships and aircraft formed under the UN mandate to counter piracy in Gulf of Aden.
