Denmark makes its mark in Karachi
Country representatives seek to promote cultural, trade ties
KARACHI:
With the aim to strengthen ties, the Royal Danish Embassy organised an event at the Beach Luxury Hotel to allow people to get acquainted with Denmark's culture.
'DK in PK' was held on Friday evening and offered an insight into Danish culture from gastronomic delights to soothing music. "Karachi is the hub of commercial activities and we thought of arranging a major event here. We want to be better known in Karachi, as we are in Islamabad," said Danish ambassador Ole Thonke. "[The city's security situation] has changed for the better," he remarked.
Visit the north: Local culture important part of any society, says Danish envoy
Thonke, who recently arrived in Pakistan, said, "The partnership between Denmark and Pakistan is not based on one business sector. We have shipping, transport, logistics, cement and fertiliser trade ties. As Denmark is an agricultural country, our strong ties with Pakistan are there too."
He also remarked that, due to the improvement in overall security of the country, they can expect better ties in the fields of renewable energy and wind power generation. Thonke mentioned that Denmark is growing as a tourist destination, as people across the globe are visiting it. People travel to the country to taste Nordic cuisine, he said, adding that Noma, in Copenhagen, was named the best restaurant of the year. At the event, numerous artisans, pharmacists, social activists and shipping giants, including Ahan, Danish Red Cross and Danish Refugee Council, had also set up stalls.

A small platter comprising crispy lamb, salted fish and rice pudding was served to all the guests. The dishes were prepared by Chef Peter Young and Johan Olli Simony. There was also a live musical performance by Danish band, Live String. "Our embassy is trying its level best to establish people-to-people contact and we are trying to improve the relations between the two countries," said Thonke. A week-long Danish Cuisine Festival will be also held at Avari Towers starting today onwards.
