DSP Islam and his son were targeted in the jurisdiction of Faqirabad police station.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Sajjad Khan confirmed that Riazul Islam was killed in a terrorist attack.
Following the incident, police cordoned off the area and began search operation in the vicinity.
Meanwhile, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack on DSP Islam.
On November 28, an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of the City Patrol Force was killed while two other policemen were injured on Monday in a brazen attack on a city patrol unit on the Ring Road.
Police targeted in Peshawar blasts
The force was raised recently by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police to patrol the city roads independent of the local police stations. They are equipped with latest video cameras, gadgets and arms.
In a similar incident on October 25, a police constable deployed for the protection of polio eradication teams was killed in an IED blast on the outskirts of Peshawar.
According to the station house officer of the Daudzai police station, the Superintendent of Police was near the Muslim Children Academy school inspecting security measures when the bomb went off. Police officials confirmed that the deployment was for the protection of polio workers, whose lives are under consistent threat.
In September, at least four policemen and five civilians were injured when a roadside bomb exploded near a police van guarding a polio team in Charsadda.
