LAHORE: The ruling party’s candidate Colonel (retd) Mubashir Javaid has been elected as Lahore’s Lord Mayor, after Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rejected nomination of Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) candidate Afeef Siddiqui.

Javaid was elected unopposed after ECP rejected Siddiqui's nomination papers after his party failed to complete the panel.

Both Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and the PTI candidate had filed their candidatures for the office of Lahore’s mayor, with the election slated to be held on December 22, 2016.

Questionable qualification: Verdict reserved on plea against Lahore’s likely mayor

Col Mubashir was elected to the Metropolitan Corporation of Lahore (MCL) on a reserved seat for technocrats, and was little known among party members before his victory today. PML-N has 228 seats in MCL out of a total 274, while PTI only has 10. He was selected by the premier himself for the post of city’s mayor.
