Asked if the title gave him any pressure, Khan responded saying, “It puts no pressure on me because I don’t believe in the title at all. It’s completely inaccurate and so, puts no pressure on me at all.”
According to the 51-year-old actor, perfection does not exist, especially in the creative field where different people have different ideas and opinions. “Perfection, according to me, doesn’t exist. There is no such thing as perfection and certainly not in the creative field. I am just a passionate person,” he said.
Khan is currently gearing up for the release of his next film Dangal, a biographical sports drama film directed by Nitesh Tiwari of Chillar Party and Bhootnath Returns fame. The film features Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat, who taught wrestling to his daughters Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat.
The actor has put in a great deal of physical effort into Dangal, wherein he will be seen as both a young and an old Phogat. For this, he put on up to 95kg and is currently in the process of bringing it back down to about 70kg.
Despite this, Khan claims that the film has not been made to promote anyone or anything.
Asked if he believes Bollywood personalities overshadow the sportsmen on whom films like Dangal are made, Khan said, “My purpose was not to promote myself or a sports personality. When I am making a film, it’s because I love the story; because I am creatively excited about it and want to share it with audience.”
“My primary responsibility is to make a good film and that’s what I concentrate on,” he continued. “I knew about the Phogat family from before. I think the biggest way we could promote the Phogat sisters and Mahavir was by making a film on them and that is what we have done.”
Dangal is slated to hit screens on December 23 and Khan hopes people will appreciate the Phogats even more after watching it. “They should appreciate what the family has been through, their struggles and achievements and the resilience that they have shown,” he stated.
Other than this, Khan has not attached any expectations from the film, although his previous projects like PK and 3 Idiots have crossed the Rs100 crore benchmark. “I never keep monetary expectations from my films, just hopes,” he explained. “I hope people love Dangal and the script that Nitesh made, the way the film has turned out. I hope that the same joy we had in making it and being a part of it is the same joy people watch it with.”
