According to police, Sub Inspector Sarfaraz Ahmed of Jhelum city police station was patrolling the streets late on Saturday night in the official police van. Constables Munawwar Hussain and Kashif Ikram were riding in the back of the van.
Child assaulted, killed by father's colleagues
At around 12:45 am, while driving through the Lalazar Conony, SI Ahmed and driver Suleman Latif said they heard gunshots from the back of the van. Latif slammed the brakes and the two rushed out of the vehicle, only to see Ikram pointing his official rifle at the two cops while slowly stepping back. Hussain, meanwhile, lay in a pool of blood and was writhing in pain.
Rather than chasing after Ikram, SI Ahmed said they rushed the injured Hussain to a hospital. However, the constable died during treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital.
Cops arrested for firing and injuring three at a picket
After completing medico legal formalities, his body was handed over to his family. Hussain’s funeral prayers were subsequently held at the Police Lines on Sunday which were attended by the Jhelum DPO Hasan Asad Alvi, DSP City Shahid Siddique and a large number of police officers.
Later in the day, police managed to track down Ikram and arrest him. Police also recovered the official rifle he had used to kill his colleague.
Police have booked the constable and started investigations into why Ikram shot his fellow officer.
