Tribute to martyrs: Partition brought back to life in Jimmy’s paintings

Renowned artist’s work showcased at National Library

ISLAMABAD: Heart-rending scenes of Partition, when hundreds of thousands of people migrated from the carved-up state of India to the new country of Pakistan, came alive at the National Library on Friday.

Advisor to the Prime Minister on National History and Literary Heritage Irfan Siddiqui inaugurated a three-day painting exhibition of renowned painter Jimmy Engineer on Friday.

Jimmy, who was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz for paining scenes of Independence and Partition, has showcased paintings "to honour the sacrifices of the martyrs from 1947 to date for the cause of Pakistan."

After inaugurating the exhibition, Siddiqui said that Jimmy was a prominent name in the country and that he had dedicated himself for the country.

He said that this exhibition had been specially arranged to pay tributes to the martyrs and national heroes. The advisor pointed out that the 90 paintings in the exhibition depicted the entire history of the country.

With the exhibition organised by the National History and Literary Heritage Division, Siddiqui said that it would travel to other cities of the country and even to other countries.

Speaking on the occasion, Jimmy said that he considered himself as an employee of the country, adding that it was a pleasure to serve the country through art.

Pakistan Green Task Force Chairman Dr. Jamal Nasir, Deputy Cultural Attache US Embassy Maureen Y. Mimnaugh, Cultural Officer China Cultural Center Liu Ying, Managing Director National Book Foundation (NBF) Prof. Dr. Inamul Haq Javeid, Joint Secretary Ministry of National History and Literary Heritage Mashhood Mirza and a large number of people from different walks of life were also present on the occasion.

Talking to the media, China Cultural Center Officer Liu Ying said that the artist beautifully produced the paintings which highlighted the culture and beauty Pakistan.
