Ship-Breaking Yard: ABAD seeks safety measures at Gadani

Safety steps being taken after recent tragedy to prevent further accidents

KARACHI: The Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (ABAD), while expressing grief over the tragic fire at the Gadani Ship-breaking Yard, has asked the government to take proper safety steps at the crucial facility. ABAD Chairman Mohsin Sheikhani said it was very strange that the government had stopped work at Gadani by imposing Section 144 instead of providing safety measures for the important area, which was the main source of raw material for steel. He said the rates of steel bars, used in the construction industry, had increased by Rs15,000 per ton due to stoppage of work at the ship-breaking yard and builders were facing hardships in continuing work on ongoing projects due to shortage of steel in the local market. “Most of the builders are on the verge of closing their projects due to the increasing rates of steel,” he said.
