LANDI KOTAL: At least six members of a pro-government peace committee in the Khyber tribal region were killed and three others injured by gunmen on Wednesday.

Political administration and Levies Subedar told The Express Tribune that the peace committee members were ambushed while they were on their way to attend a function in the Qambar Khel area. Six people were killed on the spot while three others wounded. The injured were driven to the agency headquarters hospital in Landi Kotal.

After the deadly shooting, the political administration and security forces imposed partial curfew in the area and mounted a search operation.

The government had set up peace committees in different parts of the tribal belt to aid the fight against Taliban terrorists and to stop them from regrouping and re-emerging.

Taliban militants have repeatedly targeted these peace committees.
