Passengers aboard an AeroMexico flight lived out a Hollywood nightmare straight from Snakes on a Plane when a venomous green snake slithered along and then dangled from the cabin ceiling.

A viral video showed a poisonous five-foot-long green snake hanging from the lockers directly above terrified passengers on an AeroMexico flight from Torreon to Mexico City on Sunday.

The passengers appear to have jumped out of their seats when they spotted the green creature slithering down the plane. Indalecio Medina shared the video on Twitter with the comment, “The Viper flying.... A unique experience in the flight 231 from AeroMexico.”

He later added on social media, “I had to catch it with a blanket and obviously we gave it some magazines to read for a while. The snake arrived alive and kicking, frightened but without having paid its airfare. And best of all, priority when it came to landing and animal control experts waiting for the unexpected traveler.”

It has been reported that the flight had priority landing and the snake was dealt with by animal control. One person jokingly tweeted the famous line from the Samuel L Jackson film Snakes on a Plane, but then added, “My skin crawled'. Another wrote, “It's worse than turbulance, crosswind, rain.”

A spokesperson for Aeroméxico said, “AeroMexico reports that today, on flight 231 from Torreón to Mexico City, a snake was detected inside the passenger cabin.”

“Due to the presence of the animal and following security protocols, the flight was given priority to land at the AICM. Once it had landed, AICM personnel secured the reptile. The procedures carried out for this flight are currently being evaluated to determine how the animal entered the cabin and measures have been taken to avoid such incidents in the future.”

The statement added, “For AeroMéxico, the security of its passengers and crew is of the highest priority and it always works to meet the highest quality standards.”

In October 2012, staff on a flight from Mexico to Glasgow found a snake on the plane on arrival at the Scottish airport.
