Young people and democracy

Letter February 22, 2011
For these young people to compare themselves to the brave people of Egypt is laughable.

LONDON: This is with reference to your report of February 21 titled “Youth protest against democracy”. What is wrong with young people in Pakistan? The protest seems to be a case of emotionalism and nothing else. If ordinary people want to come into power, they shouldn’t do so by asking people to throw out elected governments, but by making the systems that are present in their nations work.

For these young people (the protest was held in Lahore) to compare themselves to the brave people of Egypt is laughable. The protesters need to check their facts because the change in Egypt has not been brought about by people demanding a khilafat but actually has strongly secular undertones.
