Tanzania seizes 179 kg of heroin, arrests Pakistanis

DAR ES SALAAM: Police in Tanzania have seized 179 kg of heroin and arrested two Pakistani suspects, a senior anti-drugs official said on Tuesday.

The heroin, worth at least $2.65 million, was seized on Monday at a house in Tanzania's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

“This is the single biggest heroin bust in the country's history," said Godfrey Nzowa, the head of Tanzania's anti-narcotics police unit.

"We have arrested four suspects, among them two Pakistan nationals and two Tanzanians," he added.

Along with other African Countries, Tanzania is a major transit hub for trafficking in hard drugs from Asia and Latin America to Western markets thanks to lax customs controls and corruption.
