In its advisory, the embassy warned its citizens to remain vigilant especially while visiting markets and religious sites.

“Recent Indian media reports indicate ISIL’s desire to attack targets in India,” it said. “All US citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness as detailed in the State Department’s Worldwide Caution of September 9, 2016,” the communiqué added.

Islamic State first emerged in 2014 when it seized territories in Syria and Iraq and is active in the region surrounding Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Jordon.
Several dozen Indian nationals have reportedly traveled, majorly from Kerala and Maharashtra to join the outfit while several others were arrested before they could depart from the country. The group, however, has not been linked with any terror attacks in the country so far.
