GILGIT: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) slammed the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz in Gilgit for failing to capitalise on the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, despite the latter being at the helm of affairs in the Centre.

“There was an opportunity, but the inept chief minister (Hafeezur Rahman) seems to have lost that chance,” said PPP G-B Vice President Jamil Ahmed. He was speaking to the media at his office on Monday.

“Hafeez should have taken a lesson from the Balochistan CM who raised a voice for the rights of his province,” said Ahmed who served as deputy speaker in PPP’s last government in the region.

Ahmed vowed to raise a voice to ensure G-B gets its due share in the multi-billion-rupee project which will pass through the area.

Ahmed revealed his party would hold a mass rally on the Karakoram Highway in the Danyor area.

PPP G-B Information secretary Sadia Danish, who was also present at the talk, said they will issue a white paper against the regional government, which she claimed failed to deliver in its current term of over a year.

Danish, a former minister for information, said PPP would hold a rally on Tuesday (today) to mark G-B’s Independence Day. The aim is to highlight the grievances of people with respect to the ownership of land being offered up to CPEC without any financial compensation.

“Our lands are being given to CPEC without payment of compensation to the owners,” she said. “This trend should now stop as we think compensation should be paid to people like elsewhere in the country.”
