Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday condemned recent unprovoked ceasefire violations on the Working Boundary and the Line of Control (LoC) by Indian forces.

“I strongly condemn the recent unprovoked ceasefire violations on 25-26 October, 2016 by Indian forces at the Working Boundary in Chaprar and Harpal sectors and on the LoC in Bhimber sector, resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuries to nine others,” a PM House statement said.

The premier warned that these violations, if continued, will not go unpunished. He pointed out that Pakistan has exercised maximum restraint and that the quest for peace must not be misconstrued as a sign of weakness. Pakistan is a peace loving nation and believes in resolution of all outstanding issues and disputes through dialogue, he maintained.

“As a responsible sovereign state, we have been endeavoring for regional peace and stability for the collective betterment and prosperity of the residents of South Asia. It is unfortunate that our initiative and efforts have not been reciprocated by India.”

“India should investigate the recent incident and share the findings with Pakistan, instruct its troops to respect the ceasefire in letter and spirit, and refrain from intentionally targeting the villages and maintain peace on the Working Boundary and the LoC,” the premier stressed.

At least six civilians have been killed, and 21 injured as a result of Indian violations in less than a week. India and Pakistan have been involved in a tense verbal and diplomatic spat over the security situation in held Kashmir and frequent skirmishes on the Line of Control (LoC).

More than 100 protesters have been killed in the held valley while several incidents of unprovoked Indian aggression on the LoC have frequently occurred in recent past.
