Carving a niche: Women-on-Wheels kicks off in Rawalpindi

Rally will begin after training, registration process is completed

LAHORE: After its success in four districts of the province, the Women-on-Wheels campaign kicked off in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

The initiative has been launched by Chief Minister’s Special Monitoring Unit (Law and Order Wing) in collaboration with traffic police and the city district government. It was launched during a ceremony held at National College of Arts on Liaquat Bagh Road.

Speaking on the occasion, a spokesperson from the monitoring unit said training for the initiative will begin shortly after the launch. The campaign has so far been launched in Sargodha, Faisalabad, Lahore and Multan.

According to the spokesperson, approximately 1,500 women have received training so far.

“The unit [plans] to launch the campaign in all 36 districts of the province after its success in four districts,” she said.

The spokesperson said the move will empower women in various districts of the province and help them carve out a niche in the public sphere.

Salman Sufi, the head of the initiative, briefed participants about the campaign. He said a rally will be held after the registration and training process has been completed. Salman also reiterated the provincial government’s commitment to provide support to women.

The Rawalpindi DCO, who also spoke on the occasion, lauded the campaign and urged women to participate in the training. A large number of participants voiced their enthusiasm for the campaign and thanked the chief minister for providing a platform for women to assert their independence.
