Hunza lake water causes flooding

HUNZA: Water outflow from the spillway of a lake formed by landsliding in Hunza has stopped on Monday, causing flooding in adjacent areas.

The water from the lake in the Atta Abad area submerged 88 houses in Aeenabad and Shashkat while two bridges have also been swept away. The two areas also lost their ground link to other areas.

The water has reached Gilmat village where 42 houses and a commercial market were earlier evacuated.

Evacuations are also underway in other nearby villages.

The lake is 16 kilometers long and 350 meters wide. 2500 cusecs water is adding to the lake's water, daily. The lake does not have an appropriate spillway which is threatening the lake to burst. FW and army engineers are working tirelessly to resolve the issue.

batholith | 14 years ago | Reply Cusecs is a rate, cubic feet per second; you cannot state cusecs per day. That comes to 216,000,000 cubic feet of water per day or 6,116,438,889 liters per day.

Sajid | 14 years ago | Reply I have seen this area last two years back and i have gone till sust and had a stay in Gulmit (The Village Hotel) Hunza and it's a heaven on Earth that you can't explain in your words. I think the Government is waiting for the big clash of the lake to burst so that it can gain some relief fund from the west. I think they should call the chinese engenieers to work on the merged area so that it can be done fast. Please save The Beauty of Pakistan.

yasir sultan | 14 years ago | Reply salam to all now that damage has already been done and retrieval is difficult. govt should plan immediately to develop some sort electricity production plant and may be irrigation. definitely it ll have some effects on lower areas of Pakistan but in broader prospect it may prove to be a blessing. May Allah help Pakistan
